Newsflash: Bwindi Community Hospital opens the waiting mothersí hostel.

Justina The idea of a waiting mothersí hostel arose when mothers requested that they needed somewhere to wait to deliver rather than staying in the maternity ward. The construction began in December 2007 and has just been completed. Bwindi Community Hospital attends to more than 60 mothers a month; a few of them stay in Bwindi but the majority of women travel for more than two hours to get to the hospital.

Tumugabibwe Justina, who says that she would prefer to be addressed by her husbandís name (Mwesiga), comes from a town called Nyarutuntu which is far away. Travelling from Nyarutuntu to the hospital is difficult. One has to travel by boda- boda (motorcycle) to a neighbouring town called Butogota and catch a bus to Buhoma. This costs 3000 shillings. However if one takes a boda -boda to the hospital, it will cost 5000 shillings. For those who cannot afford, Justina says that they would have to walk for more than 4hrs and only for someone with long strides. Others walk half the distance and spend the night with relatives or friends and then travel the next morning to get to the hospital. She says that other women travel from even further villages.

Justina is ready to deliver her baby and has been at BCH for a week now. She is the first resident of the new waiting mothersí hostel. She recently lost her husband to heart problems and she has two other children of school-going age.

Justina Justina gets an income only during the coffee harvest and most of the time she barely has 3000 in her home. BCH gave Justina a cock for becoming the first woman to stay at the waiting mothersí hostel. She says that if her husband was still alive, she would have loved to have a fourth child and she would come back to stay at the hostel.

The waiting mothersí hostel provides a bed and a place to stay. It accommodates up to 14 women. Women will come and stay at the hostel towards the end of pregnancy.
